CHESTER, Pa. — Philadelphia Union suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat against Club América in the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Tuesday night at Subaru Park.
The decisive moment came early in the match when América midfielder Raphael Veiga found the back of the net in the 20th minute. After a quick attacking sequence led by winger Brian Rodríguez, Veiga controlled a pass inside the penalty area and fired a shot past the Union defense to give the visitors the lead.
Philadelphia responded by increasing pressure throughout the remainder of the match, pushing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Despite controlling significant stretches of possession and creating several promising opportunities, the Union struggled to convert their chances against América’s disciplined defense.
Union goalkeeper Andrew Rick delivered several key stops to keep the deficit at one goal and preserve the club’s chances heading into the second leg. Meanwhile, América faced an unexpected setback late in the first half when goalkeeper Luis Malagón exited the match due to injury and was replaced by veteran keeper Rodolfo Cota.
In the second half, Philadelphia intensified its attack, drawing energy from a lively home crowd at Subaru Park. However, the Union were unable to break through before the final whistle, leaving the Mexican side with a slim advantage in the two-legged series.
With the result, Club América takes a 1–0 aggregate lead into the decisive return leg in Mexico City, where the winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
For Philadelphia, the focus now shifts to regrouping and delivering a stronger attacking performance on the road as the club looks to keep its Champions Cup campaign alive.
